A Visit to Appomattox

July 2008.

Josh tries his hand at historical reinactments.

In the end, Christy proves to have better aim.

Grandma Ruth Ann and Aunt Sara came for the weekend and we spent a Saturday afternoon at the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park, about 20 minutes from our house.

We began by listening to this Confederate Soldier retell his story.

The kids did a good job sitting with Grandma Ruth Ann, listening as he recounted the events leading up to surrender of the Confederate troops.

A view of the village as its been reconstructed.

Many of the buildings are original.

I tried to talk Josh into using this one but he found the more modern conveniences.

Lauren enjoyed some fence post walking.

Josh behind bars in the jail.

Here's the desk in the room where Lee and Grant exchanged signatures.

Here's the six of us.

Lisa and the kids with Grandma Ruth Ann and Aunt Sara.

The part I enjoyed the most was the story of the surrender of arms and the demonstration of respect shown to the Confederates by the Federals.

We all enjoyed the day trip.

Aunt Sara and Justin crashed when we arrived home!
